Discord setup
Create the application
- Go to the Discord Developer Portal and press New Application.
- The application's name and avatar are what members see in Discord.
- Open Bot in the left menu.
The bot token
Press Reset Token and copy the value. Discord shows it once.
Paste it under Settings → Discord on your bot. Botwright checks it with Discord, then stores it encrypted with AES-256-GCM. It is never displayed again, never sent to the browser, never included in AI prompts, and it is redacted from logs.
If a token leaks, reset it in the Developer Portal and paste the new one — the old token stops working immediately.
Botwright never asks for your Discord password. Signing in with Discord uses Discord's OAuth2 authorization screen.
Privileged intents
Discord requires you to switch on two intents by hand when a bot needs them:
- Server Members Intent — needed to react to members joining or leaving (welcome messages, join logs, auto-roles).
- Message Content Intent — needed to read message text (auto-moderation, keyword triggers, auto-responses, prefix commands).
Your bot's Settings → Discord page lists which of these it needs and why, and shows whether each one is currently enabled. Deploying is blocked with a clear message if a required intent is off.
Bots in 100 or more servers need Discord's approval for privileged intents.
Permissions
Botwright derives the permission list from what your bot actually does:
- A command that times members out adds Timeout Members.
- The welcome module with auto-roles adds Manage Roles.
- A ticket bot that creates channels adds Manage Channels.
Each permission is shown with its reason, and the invite link requests exactly that set. Administrator is never requested.
Role order matters
A bot can only manage roles that are *below* its own highest role. If a role assignment fails, open Server Settings → Roles and drag your bot's role above the roles it should hand out. The overview page warns you when it detects this.
Slash commands
Commands are registered with Discord's application-command API when the bot starts. Global commands appear in every server; you can switch to per-server registration under Configuration → General while testing.
Rules to follow
Bots must comply with Discord's Developer Policy and Community Guidelines. Self-bots, token grabbers, unsolicited mass DMs, raid tools and anything built to evade Discord's safeguards are not allowed on Botwright.
